My teaching philosophy as a counselor educator is grounded in culturally sustaining pedagogy, experiential learning, and competency-based assessment. I view teaching as a leadership responsibility that shapes counselor professional identity, ethical decision-making, and readiness for practice. As an educator working directly with counselors-in-training, my instructional approach emphasizes applied learning, reflective practice, and accountability aligned with accreditation and professional standards (CACREP, 2016).
Culturally sustaining pedagogy is intentionally embedded throughout my teaching. Course content, learning activities, and assessments are designed to engage students in critical reflection on culture, power, and systemic inequities while fostering inclusive learning environments. I prioritize instructional strategies that honor students’ lived experiences and promote cultural humility, ethical awareness, and advocacy-oriented practice.
Teaching also includes gatekeeping responsibilities. I integrate clear expectations, measurable learning outcomes, and transparent evaluation processes to assess student competence and professional dispositions. When concerns arise related to academic performance, ethical behavior, or professional readiness, I engage in remediation through supportive yet evaluative processes that protect clients and uphold the integrity of the counseling profession.
My teaching philosophy reflects my identity as a counselor educator, leader, and advocate committed to preparing competent, ethical, and culturally responsive counselors.
